LENTEN SERIES
The
information below is available in your
current newsletter.
|
|
This year’s Lenten Series focuses upon healing
as an experience we should expect and for which
we should pray. The Wednesday night series will
have a familiar format: a covered dish dinner
at 6:15 p.m. in the rectory and program from
7:30—8:30 p.m. in the church. The dates,
topics, and speakers are outlined below.
|
|
February 24,
Healing in the Christian and Anglican Tradition;
speaker: The Right Reverend David Colin Jones,
Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia.
Bishop Jones will introduce our Lenten Series by
presenting Christian healing as a natural part
of Christian living. He will also speak of the
healing of memories.
|
|
March 3,
Healing of the Body;
speakers: Dr.
Jeff Harris, M.D., Internist and immediate past
President of the American College of Physicians,
and Janell Hoffman, R.N., C.C.R.N. at Inova
Loudoun Hospital Center, Intensive Care Unit.
They have crafted the following statement about
their presentation.
“How
the body heals, is a highly individual
perception among patients and patient’s family
members during illness. Spiritual beliefs may
assume greater importance at a time of illness
than at any other time in a person’s life. We
will tackle this subject with case studies from
our past experiences dealing with patients and
their family members during illness, recovery,
or even death.”
|
|
March 10,
Healing of the Mind and
Spirit;
speaker: Dr. Bob Goshen, M.D.,
Psychiatrist. When asked to describe how he
will explore this topic, he offered this
comment.
“For a long time the mental health movement has
held itself aloof from the teachings and
practice of popular religion. Freud seemed to
reject religion entirely, while others, such as
Jung, had an interest in people’s spiritual
lives but remained skeptical of organized
religion. The pharmaceutical industry makes no
mention of it. Recent research, however,
suggests many possible links between psyche and
spirit.”

|
March 17,
Liturgies for Healing;
speaker: Jacque Womble, lay minister in
healing, All Saints’ Episcopal Church,
Richmond. Jacque Womble has had years of
experience in the healing ministry with her
husband, The Rev. Rufus Womble, Episcopal
priest. He was the President of the
Interenational Order of St. Luke and spent most
of his ministry focusing upon healing. Jacque
was very much a part of his ministry of prayer
and healing. She will travel from Richmond to
be with us that evening.
Jacque Womble describes her
segment of the Lenten Series in this way. “God
has given us one of His greatest gifts, the
ministry and mystery of healing. He invites us
to explore the many avenues available to us
through prayer as well as the necessity of our
being clear vessels through which His power can
flow. Forgiveness will be stressed using the
Prayer Book. We will close with a traditional
Healing Service.”
|
 |
Since
this is St. Patrick’s Day,
we
will have a mild Irish celebration
before the program.
Can you bring a favorite
Irish dish
to our covered dish supper? |
|
|
March 24,
Evening Prayer,
including reflections on healing and prayers for
healing. No dinner; service at 7:30 p.m.
in the church.
|
|
This Lenten Series promises to be a wonderful
exploration
of the topic of healing.
Mark your calendars and
plan to be present for inspiration and
provocative thought. |

Palm
Sunday

This year when we gather outdoors for the Blessing of Palms,
we hope that we will not still be mired in snow or mud. If
the snow melts and the winds of March dry out the ground, we
will know that spring has arrived.
On Palm Sunday we experience in liturgical pageantry a wide
range of emotions: triumph and sorrow, exhilaration and
anguish. These emotions mirror the somber events of Holy
Week. When we gather outdoors in the church yard to bless
palms and process, we liturgically re-enact our Lord’s
triumphal entry into Jerusalem. After we enter the church,
we hear the Passion read in parts and celebrate our Lord’s
abiding presence in the Eucharist. We then enter Holy Week
with grateful hearts.
Do be present on Sunday, March 28, to experience this
poignant liturgy.
Seder and Eucharist
On Maundy
Thursday
April 1 ~ 6:30 p.m.
The Seder is the Jewish meal commemorating the Jews’ Exodus
from Egypt. One of God’s plagues upon the Egyptians, who
refused to let his people go, was the killing of all of
their first born. The Hebrew people avoided this plague by
placing blood on the lintel of their doorway. In this way
the Angel of Death knew to pass over the Hebrew people.
The
Seder meal relives liturgically this drama through ritual
food and wine. Lamb is the traditional meat, with greens,
apples, and bitter herbs. All of the customary foods will be
included when the parish gathers at the home of Lisa and Bob
Goshen to enjoy the Seder and celebrate the Eucharist at the
conclusion of the meal. This is the point at which
Christians celebrate the fact that “Christ our Passover is
sacrificed for us.”
Jesus’ final meal with his disciples was during the time of
the Passover celebration. We therefore keep the feast with
joy and the solemnity which Holy Week requires.
Since Cunningham Chapel Parish does not have a parish hall,
the Seder and Eucharist must be in a private home. Space is
limited. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate more than
twenty-five people, and you will need a reservation.
Telephone the church office at 837-1112 to let us know how
many will be in your party.
Good Friday Services
April 2, 2010
Christ Church offers two opportunities for worship on Good
Friday. Stations of the Cross will be observed at Noon at
Berryville Presbyterian Church.. This is an ecumenical
service sponsored by the Clarke County Ministerial
Association. Your Rector will be participating. For those
who do not like to drive at night or simply prefer a service
in the day, this service may be appealing.
The evening service is at 7:30 p.m. at Christ Church. This
is the Episcopal liturgy for Good Friday, which is a series
of solemn collects followed by prayer. By tradition, the
Eucharist is not celebrated on Good Friday.
Since Christ Church is open at all times, you may wish to
enter the church for individual prayer on this day.

Outreach Projects for the
Year 2010
|
Christ Church
Food Pantry
February CCC Recap:
Thanks to your generosity, as the snow began to fall on
Friday February 5th, Christ Church Cares distributed food to
16 needy families (18 adults and 24 children) who live in
Millwood and Boyce.
March CCC Recap:
On Saturday, March 6, the Outreach Committee
distributed food to 20 local households, feeding 42 of our
Christ Church neighbors. Thank you for your continuing
generosity for this important outreach effort. In addition
to parish support, we received produce from Food Lion in
Berryville and baked goods from CCAP and Panera Bread in
Winchester. The Panera baked goods were especially
spectacular!
Our next open pantry is the Saturday before
Easter, April 3, and we hope to be able to provide Easter
hams.
As
always,
thank you for your continuing generosity.
